Câu tường thuật là một dạng chuyển đổi câu đòi hỏi bạn học phải nhớ được rất nhiều yếu tố. 1. Khái quát về câu tường thuật
Câu tường thuật là dạng chuyển đổi từ câu trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp trong tiếng Anh. Trong đó câu trực tiếp và câu gián tiếp được chuyển đổi luân phiên nhau sao cho nghĩa của câu không bị đổi.
1.1. Câu trực tiếp
Lời nói trực tiếp thường là câu dẫn chính xác được đặt trong dấu ngoặc kép.
Cấu trúc câu trực tiếp: “S + V…”, S + said/ said to Sb/ told.
Ví dụ:
He said: ”The final exam is easy”. (Anh ấy nói: “Bài kiểm tra cuối này dễ”)

1.2. Câu gián tiếp
Lời nói gián tiếp sẽ sử dụng cách nói khác mà câu nói không đặt trong dấu ngoặc kép
Ví dụ: Mai said, ”I want to go school”. → Mai said she wanted to go school. (Mai nói câu ấy muốn đến trường)
Trong đó câu tường thuật sẽ có các loại như:
- Câu tường thuật dạng câu kể: S + said/ said to Sb/ told + that + S + V (lùi 1 thì)
- Câu tường thuật dạng câu hỏi: S + asked/wanted to know/wondered + if/whether/Wh-words + S + V (lùi 1 thì)
- Câu tường thuật dạng câu mệnh lệnh: S + asked/ told + O + (not) + to V

2. Nguyên tắc chuyển câu trực tiếp thành câu gián tiếp
Để chuyển được dạng câu trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp chúng ta cần tuân theo những nguyên tắc sau:
2.1. Đổi chủ ngữ và tân ngữ
Chủ ngữ:
I → he, she
We → they
You → We, I
Tân ngữ:
Me → him, her
Us → them
You → me, us
Đại từ sở hữu:
Mine → his, her
Ours → theirs
Yours → mine, ours
Tính từ sở hữu:
My → his, her
Our → their
Your → my, our
2.2. Thực hiện lùi thì
Hiện tại đơn → Quá khứ đơn
Hiện tại tiếp diễn → Quá khứ tiếp diễn
Hiện tại hoàn thành → Quá khứ hoàn thành
Hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn → Quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn
Quá khứ đơn → Quá khứ đơn/Quá khứ hoàn thành
Quá khứ tiếp diễn → Quá khứ tiếp diễn/Quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn
Quá khứ hoàn thành → Quá khứ hoàn thành
Tương lai đơn → Tương lai trong quá khứ
Tương lai tiếp diễn → Tương lai tiếp diễn trong quá khứ
2.3. Đổi modal verbs
Can → could
May → might
Must → must/had to
Tuy nhiên trong một số trường hợp thì động từ không thay đổi trong câu gián tiếp vì vậy bạn phải cần chú ý như:
- Khi nói về một sự thật, chân lý
- Câu trực tiếp là một câu điều kiện không có thực hoặc giả định sau: wish, would rather, would sooner, it’s time.
- Với thì quá khứ đơn, quá khứ tiếp diễn ở mệnh đề thời gian
- Trong câu có năm cụ thể
2.4. Đổi trạng từ chỉ thời gian, nơi chốn
This → that, those
These → there
Here → then, at that time
Now → that day
Today → The day before, the previous day
