Ba liên từ tiếng Anh Although, Even though, Though đều mang ý nghĩa “mặc dù” và được sử dụng để diễn đạt sự tương phản giữa hai mệnh đề. Các liên từ này luôn phải đi kèm với một mệnh đề đầy đủ gồm chủ ngữ và động từ.

Các cấu trúc phổ biến:

Ví dụ:

• Although it was very cold, they still went swimming. (Mặc dù trời rất lạnh, họ vẫn đi bơi.)
• She continued working even though she was extremely tired. (Cô ấy vẫn tiếp tục làm việc mặc dù rất mệt mỏi.)

Trong ba từ trên, even though mang tính nhấn mạnh hơn, còn though đôi khi được dùng ở cuối câu để diễn đạt một cách tự nhiên hơn trong văn nói.

1.2. In spite of/ Despite

Hai liên từ In spite of và Despite có nghĩa tương đương với "although" nhưng khác biệt về cấu trúc. Thay vì đi kèm với một mệnh đề, chúng được theo sau bởi danh từ, cụm danh từ hoặc động từ dạng V-ing.

Các cấu trúc thường gặp:

Ví dụ:

• Despite the bad weather, they went camping. (Mặc dù thời tiết xấu, họ vẫn đi cắm trại.)
• In spite of feeling exhausted, she kept running. (Mặc dù cảm thấy kiệt sức, cô ấy vẫn tiếp tục chạy.)

Ngoài ra, khi muốn theo sau là một mệnh đề, có thể sử dụng cấu trúc:

Ví dụ:

• Despite the fact that he studied hard, he failed the exam. (Mặc dù học hành chăm chỉ, anh ấy vẫn trượt kỳ thi.)

1.3. Chuyển đổi câu từ Although sang Despite/ In spite of

Việc chuyển đổi câu giữa Although và Despite/ In spite of có thể thực hiện theo ba cách phổ biến:

Cách 1: Dùng V-ing khi chủ ngữ của hai mệnh đề giống nhau

Ví dụ:

• Although he was feeling sick, he still went to work.
  → Despite feeling sick, he still went to work.
  (Mặc dù cảm thấy ốm, anh ấy vẫn đi làm.)

Cách 2: Dùng danh từ khi chủ ngữ là danh từ + động từ "to be" + tính từ

Ví dụ:

• Although the exam was difficult, she passed it.
  → Despite the difficult exam, she passed it.
  (Mặc dù bài thi khó, cô ấy vẫn vượt qua.)

Cách 3: Dùng "the fact that" khi cần giữ nguyên mệnh đề

Ví dụ:

• Although he didn’t have much experience, he got the job.
  → Despite the fact that he didn’t have much experience, he got the job.
  (Mặc dù không có nhiều kinh nghiệm, anh ấy vẫn nhận được công việc.)
